US Open: Meet Botic van de Zandschulp, the unseeded player who stunned third seed Carlos Alcaraz

New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz’s 15-match unbeaten streak came to an end at the US Open after Botic van de Zandschulp defeated him 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round in New York on Friday, August 30.

Alcaraz was one of the favourites to win the tournament but lost in straight sets against Botic. The Spaniard was aiming to become the third player in the Open Era to win the Rolland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open in the same season.

Alcaraz also earned a silver medal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Olympics 2024 final. He entered the US Open with a 16-2 record and this was his first loss in any major tournament after Wimbledon 2021.

Who is Botic van de Zandschulp?

Botic van de Zandschulp is from the Netherlands. He has a career-high ranking of world no.22 in singles and is the current Dutch No.2 in men’s singles. He won one ATP Challenger singles title in Hamburg and also won the ATP Challenger doubles title in Alphen.

Botic has been qualified for a Grand Slam quarter-final only once and has made great progress on the ATP Tour in recent years. The Dutchman is known for his brilliant adaptability on different surfaces. He also has a powerful baseline game and has earned recognition on the world stage.

Botic steadily climbed the rankings and became one of the most promising players in tennis. He got a lot of international attention during the US Open 2021 when he qualified for the quarterfinals by defeating several big players including Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman.
