Vinesh Phogat appeals to CAS against Olympics disqualification, seeks to be given silver medal

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) appealed against her disqualification from the 50kg freestyle final at Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Vinesh was barred from competing in the gold medal match against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt after appearing overweight by 100 grams in her weigh-in for the bout on Wednesday.

As per competition rules, Vinesh was denied the silver medal and was stripped of all bout record to be placed at the bottom of the standings.

Vinesh seeks silver medal

The IOC also decided that only one bronze medal will be awarded at Paris 2024 with Vinesh’s opponent in the final sixth seed USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt taking on Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba for the gold medal match while defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan taking Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the bronze leve match.

India had appealed to the International Olympic Committee and lodged a complaint with the United World Wrestling.

Now Vinesh has knocked the doors of CAS, the highest court to determine sporting cases in the world.

As per a report in India Today, Vinesh, in her appeal to CAS had sought to be awarded the silver medal. CAS is expected to deliver a verdict on Thursday.
