New Delhi: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in the women’s 50kg category at the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid on Saturday. The two-time Olympian Indian wrestler defeated Mariia Tiumerekova by 10-5 in the final to win the gold medal.
Vinesh reached Madrid after receiving her Spanish visa at the last minute on Wednesday. She bagged three back-to-back wins in the women’s 50 Kg category without much difficulty and advanced to the final. She defeated former Russian wrestler Mariia Tiumerekova, who is now competing as an individual neutral athlete.
Vinesh first defeated Pan American champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba 12-4 on points after that She defeated Canada’s Madison Parks by fall in the quarterfinal, who won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
In the semi-final, she beat another Canadian Katie Dutchak by 9-4 on points. After her training and competition in Spain ends, she will travel to France for a 20-day training stint in preparation for the Paris Olympics Games.
The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) approved her request to include her personal strength and conditioning coach Wayne Lombard for the Hungary training camp in May 2024.
The two-time world championships medalist Vinesh Phogat competed in the Budapest wrestling ranking series in June 2024 where she lost to China’s Jiang Zhu by 5-0 in the quarterfinal and failed to qualify for the next round. After her exit from the Budapest series she continued her training in Hungary before heading to Madrid for the Grand Prix of Spain.
