New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh defeated the title-holder Ding Liren in the last game and became the youngest world Chess Champion in history on Thursday, December 12. He is only the second Indian to clinch the title after Vishwanathan Anand.
He secured 7.5 points against his Chinese opponent after winning the 14th and last game of the match. As a title winner, Gukesh will get USD 1.3 million from 2.5 million prize purse. He also became the youngest world chess champion, surpassing Russia’s legendary Gary Kasparov. He won the Candidates Tournament earlier this year to qualify for the World Championship final.
After winning the final Gukesh said that he was dreaming about this moment for the last 10 years and he’s very happy that his dream turned into a reality. He further added that he got bit emotional because he was not expecting to win but then he got the chance to press on. A video of his father’s reaction also went viral on social media when he realised that his son became the youngest world chess champion.
