New Delhi: Virat Kohli achieved a new milestone in his T20 career after featuring in the playing XI for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, March 22. Kohli became only the 3rd Indian to complete 400 matches in T20 cricket.

Kohli is one of the only four Indians along with the legendary MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Manish Pandey to have been part of the IPL since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008. The RCB superstar was felicitated by the BCCI ahead of the IPL 2025 opener between KKR and RCB at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Kohli joined Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma in an elite list of Indian players to have played 400 matches in T20s. Kohli, who retired from T20Is last year, played 125 matches for India in the shortest format. He has only featured in 5 T20 matches for Delhi while the remaining of his 270 appearances have come for RCB across tournaments.

Former India T20I skipper and Mumbai Indians batter Rohit holds the record for most appearances by an Indian in T20s. Rohit has so far played 448 matches in his T20 career and has 10,337 runs to his name at an average of 28.12. Karthik is in the second spot with 412 matches in his T20 career.

Virat Kohli – The leading run-getter in IPL

Kohli is the only player in IPL history to have played for only one team since the inception of the tournament in 2008. He is also the most successful batter in the tournament and the leading run-getter with 8,004 runs in 252 matches at an average of over 61 and a strike rate of more than 154, including 8 centuries and 55 half-centuries.

Kohli also holds the record for the most runs scored by a batter in a single season of the IPL. The RCB star set the record when he smashed a staggering 973 runs in just 16 matches in the 2016 season to power his team into the final where they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kohli also finished as the leading run-getter in IPL 2024 and will be hoping to continue his fine form with the bat for RCB in IPL 2025.
