New Delhi: Star batter Virat Kohli has slumped to his lowest point in the ICC Test rankings in last 12 years. Kohli’s slide continued in the rankings charts after a series of poor performances in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Apart from a century in the series opener at Perth, the veteran batter could not make any impact in rest of the four games.
The former India captain mustered just 190 runs in the entire tournament and slipped to the 27th spot in the batters rankings released on Wednesday. This was his lowest ranking since December 2012, when he ranked 36th in the list but Kohli was just an year old in the longest format of the game. That was also the last time Kohli was placed outside the top 25 batters list in the world.
Kohli’s slump a threat to his career
Looking at the statistics, Kohli scored not even 200 runs in as many as 10 Test innings which he played. The stats are an alarm and could be a potential threat to his career, which is literally down with series of woeful shows in the recent past. In the Perth Test, it seemed like Kohli was back to his original when he smashed a sensational century but it dipped down again for him the second innings onwards.
While confidence has not been an issue for the star batter, which has been the case for skipper Rohit Sharma, reckless shots and repetition of the same mistakes is what has taken him down. Meanwhile, Englishman Joe Root is atop the batting charts while South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma, who sizzled in the Pakistan Tests, jumped three spots to be at number 6th. Star Pakistan player Babar Azam also gained a five-spot jump to sit at 12th in the batting rankings.
