Washington Summit 2024: Know about it
The official name of the summit is ‘Ukraine and Transatlantic Security’ and it aims to focus on the response of NATO to the increasing conflict worldwide which has disrupted peace and democratic foundations, especially the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia and North Korea supplying weapons to the latter. After Russia and North Korea announced cooperation on the Ukraine war, Stoltenberg said that the alliance would be a topic of discussion at the summit. It includes dialogue on increasing defence production and reaffirming the commitment of the allies to military readiness and the defence of all the territories of NATO.
Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, NATO has continuously supported the latter and aims to do so in the future. The organisation, which was been criticised for not practically helping Ukraine, aims to send a strong message to Russia that it will remain united and committed to helping Ukraine thwart the invasion. While some NATO members pushed for Ukrainian accession to the alliance, they realised that it would be possible only after the invasion ended since such an action would make NATO directly involved in the war with Russia if Ukraine became a member.
In the meantime, Ukraine is facing a severe shortage in manpower with Russia having a far bigger population. which gives it greater manpower resources. However, their losses in the war are also considered to be higher than the opposite force. On May 14, 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken went to Kyiv to reaffirm the support of his country. A month before that, the US Congress approved a $60 billion aid package including military assistance, artillery and air defence systems. Through the trip of Blinken, the US administration once again declared its commitment to the long-term security of Ukraine amidst escalating conflict.
