New Delhi: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday was honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. In a career spanning 13 years, Ashwin cemented his place as the leading spinner for the Indian Test cricket team and also played a pivotal role in several limited-over matches.
The legendary Indian cricketer recieved India’s fourth-highest civilian honour from Droupadi Murmu for his illustrious career in international cricket. Ashwin hung up his boots from international cricket after the third Test match against Australia at the Gabba, Brisbane, in December last year.
He announced his retirement during an emotional press conference following the match, shocking the cricketing world by stating that it would be his last day as an Indian cricketer at the international level.
The wily off-spinner played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, finishing his career with 765 international wickets.

Ashwin’s stellar career
Among some major highlights of Ashwin’s Test career were a whopping 37 five-fors, close to 100 wickets apiece against both Australia and England, and over 50 wickets a year on four occasions. He was at the peak of his powers during the 2016-17 home season, when he picked up 27 wickets in a three-Test series against New Zealand, 28 in five fixtures against England, and 21 scalps against Australia in four Tests.
In the limited-overs format, he was part of the winning squad in the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In the 2015 ODI World Cup edition, he was instrumental to India’s run to the semi-final with 13 wickets from eight games. In T20IS, his best display came at the World Cup in 2014, when he took 4 for 11 against Australia, and 11 wickets overall as India finished as the runner-ups.
A more than capable batter, Ashwin notched up 14 fifties and six centuries in Test cricket.
