New Delhi: It was an emotional scene in Abu Dhabi as Lewis Hamilton drove his final race for Mercedes before his move to Ferrari for the 2025 season. Starting at 16th place in qualifying, Hamilton ended the race P4, overtaking his teammate George Russell in the closing minutes.
After finishing the race, Hamilton marked the occasion with a final doughnut as Mercedes driver. He has been with Mercedes since his rookie year, first as a McLaren-Mercedes driver before coming to the Mercedes AMG team. Though the season had finished in the ideal term for both Mercedes and the British driver personally, there were glimpses of vintage Hamilton throughout the season.

Lewis Hamilton’s 2024 season
With two wins in the season, Hamilton ended the season with 223 points, finishing seventh overall. In Silverstone this year, Hamilton displayed immense skill to win his ninth British Grand Prix, a record for most wins in a single venue. In the wet condition, the 39-year-old was able to take the win from Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, both looking threatening but not enough to take away Hamilton’s home win. This season he also became the first driver to win beyond a 300th career start.
Hamilton’s partnership with Mercedes has surpassed many records held by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari between 1996 and 2006. With 84 wins and six World Championship titles, Hamilton dominated the world of F1 along with the German team. Mercedes have themselves won eight consecutive titles with Hamilton between 2014 and 2021.
Hamilton will be looking to make an impressive stint at Ferrari and will hope to regain the Constructors title for the Italian team, having not won since 2007, which happened to be Hamilton’s first season in F1. At the close of the race, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was heard saying over the team radio that this was “a drive of a champion”. While he has struggled under the new F1 regulations, the P4 finish certainly ended the season for both Mercedes and Hamilton on a high.
