WATCH: Magnus Carlsen left awestruck as Indian female chess star touches his feet

New Delhi: Staying true to the rich tradition of the country, India’s Bristy Mukherjee touched world number one chess player Magnus Carlsen’s feet at the recently concluded All India Women Rapid event (Event B) at the Tata Steel Chess India Festival 2024. Bristy’s touching gesture on receiving the winner’s trophy from Carlsen is going viral on social media.

Mukherjee won the All India Women Rapid event with a 7/7 score, and just before receiving the prestigious trophy performed one of India’s old-age customers to leave Carlsen awestruck. The Norwegian legend was pleasantly surprised by the sweet gesture, which put a big smile on his face.

After winning the coveted title at the Tata Steel Chess India Festival 2024, Mukherjee sought blessings from Carlsen, a big icon of the game. The young female chess star had earlier surprised Vishwanathan Anand with the same gesture. The iconic Indian chess player was also present on the stage during the closing ceremony.

Mukherjee first shook Carlsen’s hand before touching his feet. The Norwegian’s face lit up after the sweet and touching gesture from the 20-year-old Indian.

Hundreds of young fans flooded the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata to catch a glimpse of the legendary chess player from Norway at the closing ceremony on Sunday. Several fans even watched the games on the stage by sitting on the stairs in the auditorium.

Carlsen was even mobbed by fans as he tried to leave the auditorium.

Carlsen weaves his magic in Kolkata

Carlsen weaved his magic on the Kolkata crowd with a sensational performance that saw him bag a double at the Tata Steel Chess India tournament. The Norwegian Grandmaster secured both the blitz and rapid titles and completed a second double victory in Kolkata, replicating his remarkable win from 2019. The 33-year-old got the better of India’s Arjun Erigiasi and Vidith Gujarathi to achieve the remarkable feat.
