New Delhi: A day after refuting the reports of Jason Gillespie’s sacking as Pakistan’s current red-ball and interim white-ball coach, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced the appointment of Aaqib Javed as the interim white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. PCB confirmed Javed will serve as the team’s interim white-ball coach till the Champions Trophy 2025 in February next year.
After reports went viral on Sunday that Gillespie was set to be sacked and replaced by Javed as Pakistan’s all-format coach, the PCB released a statement stating that the former Australia pacer will remain the team’s red-ball coach for their two-match Test series against South Africa in December-January. However, the PCB did not deny replacing Gillespie as the interim white-ball coach.
Gillespie had taken over as Pakistan’s interim white-ball coach after the departure of Gary Kirsten earlier this year. Pakistan went on to beat Australia 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series under Gillespie’s guidance but lost the three-match T20I series 3-0 Down Under. Javed will now take over the white-ball duties from Gillespie till the Champions Trophy 2025.
