New Delhi: Spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has slammed the prevailing ‘superstar’ culture in Indian team saying that there should be an effort to normalise things. Ashwin, who retired from cricket last year, has urged the fans to stop treating Indian players as demigods in the future so that they remain grounded and common people can relate to them.
Considered as one of India’s most successful spinner, Ashwin bid adieu to the game with 765 international wickets across formats. Meanwhile, on his Hindi YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat’, he said that legendary players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli smashing a century should be considered a usual business as they have already achieved a lot of things in their illustrious careers.
We must not encourage superstardom: Ashwin
The former Indian spinner said that it is important to normalise things in Indian cricket and we should not encourage the superstardom and super celebrities within the Indian cricket team. Ashwin further said that all the players are cricketers and not actors or superstars. In the recent time, Indian men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also shared his thoughts about the superstar culture prevalent in the team, urging that the focus should be on the team rather than individual achievements.
Ashwin, who retired from international cricket after an illustrious 14-year career, further said that personal milestones should not overshadow the ultimate goal of winning tournaments for the nation. the former spinner raised concerns over Indian selectors’ decision to name five spinners in the team for the ICC Champions Trophy.
The marquee event will begin on February 19 in Pakistan and India will play all their matches in Dubai. The Men in Blue lock horns with Bangladesh in their first contest on February 20 while face arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai. If India mange to reach the finals, the game would be shifted to Dubai otherwise it will be played in Lahore.
