New Delhi: French side Paris Saint-Germain long obsessed over winning the Champions League and shelled out millions to bring in superstars to realise that dream.

But ironically they won their maiden European Cup title sans superstars as Luis Enrique’s side thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich to be the 24th different team to win club football’s most prestigious trophy.

PSG’s teenage sensation Desire Doue scored a brace as they blew away Italian giants Inter in the most one-sided UCL final in recent times.

In their 14-game campaign prior to the final, Inter had trailed for only 17 minutes. But on Saturday, it did not take long for them to fall behind as Vitinha’s perfectly-weighted pass allowed Doue to lay it off for Ashraf Hakimi to tap-in from close range in the 12th minute against his former club.

Doue then took charge as his deflected shot in the 20th minuted and close range shot in the 63rd effectively killed the contest. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (73) and Senny Mayulu (86) then inflicted more misery on their hapless opponents.

‘Incredible’

“Since day one I said I wanted to win important trophies, and Paris never won the Champions League. We did it for the first time. It’s a great feeling to make many people happy,” Enrique said after PSG’s triumph.

“I have no words. That was just incredible for me, simply incredible,” player of the match Doue said.

“We were almost out a few times during the season, then we managed to progress and completed an extraordinary season. Our coach gave us the freedom, kept us calm. This is his philosophy. He prepared the final in the best possible way, and we saw that,” PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma said.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi admitted they were below par in the final and lost to a far superior team.

“Paris deserved to win this game and the trophy. We’re disappointed, but the path to this point was great. As coach, I am proud of my players. The game, of course, wasn’t good enough on our part. We’re disappointed, sad. The players gave their all,” he said.

“Congratulations to Paris, they were better on every level. They had more energy. This is football; sometimes defeats happen. I am happy to be part of this group of players. I am very proud of the team and what we did until this point,” Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella.
