New Delhi: Navdeep Singh, India’s gold medallist from the recently concluded Paris Paralympics 2024 revealed his favourite cricketer and joined the viral ‘Thala for a reason’ trend as he pointed out similarities between his gold-winning campaign and MS Dhoni’s iconic jersey number 7. Navdeep won gold medal for India in the men’s javelin throw F46 category.
Navdeep initially won a silver medal in the men’s javelin F46 final. However, his medal was upgraded to gold after Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah was disqualified from the competition. The para javelin thrower clinched his maiden medal at the Paralympics and India’s seventh gold medal at the Paris Games with a record throw of 47.32m.
During his appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on his YouTube channel, Navdeep said he was aware of the ‘Thala for a reason trend’ which was started by Dhoni fans and revolves around his jersey number. Navdeep jokingly pointed out several coincides between his campaign at the Paralympics 2024 and no.7, showcasing why ‘Thala for a reason’ is so popular.
“There was no medal in Paris (Olympics) but we got seven gold medals in Paris (Paralympics), Thala for a reason (laughs). Saat samundar se (they came from seven oceans away), Thala for a reason, everything is seven, Thala for a reason,” Navdeep told the host.
The host then went on to ask Navdeep when he won the medal. “7th, Thala for a reason,” he replied. When asked what number of gold was his for India at the Paralympics, Navdeep once again said “7, Thala for a reason.”
“47.32 (Navdeep’s best throw) – Why is a seven there? Thala for a reason,” he added.

Navdeep names his favourite cricketer, snubs Dhoni, Kohli
Navdeep picked India’s current ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma as his favourite cricketer while snubbing Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Comparisons were drawn between the Paralympic gold medallist and Indian cricket team superstar Kohli after a video of the 23-year-old hurling expletives to pump himself up during his final in Paris went viral on social media.
Kohli is also known for his aggressive approach on the field and never shies away from giving a mouthful to the opposition. However, Navdeep failed to buy into the comparisons and picked Rohit over Kohli and Dhoni as his favourite cricketer.
“Dhoni waale fan ho ya Virat waale fan ho (Are you a Dhoni fan or Virat fan?),” Mishra asked Navdeep. “Rohit Sharma,” replied the Paralympic gold medallist.
Navdeep revealed he became Rohit’s fan due to his batting after witnessing his maiden ODI double hundred against Sri Lanka in 2014. Rohit smashed a stunning knock of 264 runs against Sri Lanka in an ODI at the Eden Gardens in Sri Lanka, the highest individual score by any batter in ODI history.
