New Delhi: The wait is finally over for Indian fans as Neeraj Chopra will be finally in action at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday, August 06. The reigning Olympic champion will begin his title defence in Paris by taking part in the qualifying round in the men’s javelin throw event. The expectations are sky high from Neeraj, who has won multiple titles since his gold medal triumph at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Neeraj had scripted history at the Tokyo Games by becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics. He also became only the second Indian to bag an individual gold medal at the Olympics after Abhinav Bindra. Neeraj has since won a gold medal at the World Championships and multiple Diamond League titles.
The 26-year-old will be hoping to continue his stellar run at the Paris Olympics 2024 where he will be up against some of the best javelin throwers in the world. However, Neeraj will have to first qualify for the final by doing well in the qualification round which will allow him to compete for a spot on the podium.
What Neeraj Chopra needs to do to qualify for men’s javelin final at Paris Olympics?
A total of 32 athletes will be competing in the qualifying round of men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday. The 32 athletes have been divided into two groups of 16 each. Neeraj is part of Group B alongside the likes of Max Dehning and two-time world champion Anderson Peters. The top 12 athletes from the two groups combined will qualify for the final.
Neeraj can make it to the men’s javelin final in two ways. He can gain direct entry in the final if he can register a throw of at least 84m in his three attempts during the qualifying round. If he fails to do so, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist will have to ensure that his best throw is among the top 12 throws in the qualifying round which will earn him a place in the men’s javelin final.
If more than 12 athletes throw 84m or above in the qualifying round, they will all qualify for the final. Neeraj’s Indian compatriot Kishore Jena will also be in action in the qualifying round and will be competing against the likes of Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch in Group B.
If Neeraj manages to clinch a second successive gold medal at the Paris Olympics, he will become the first-ever Indian athlete to win two back-to-back gold medals in Olympics history. Neeraj will be in action in the qualifying round at the Paris Olympics at around 3:20 PM IST on Tuesday, August 06.
