New Delhi: There’s little doubt that of all the exciting young talents in the Tottenham Hotspur squad, Lucas Bergvall is the most promising of the lot. Over the years Swedish players have made moves to big clubs in Europe, including Hugo Larsson, Viktor Gyokeres and Anthony Elanga.
The latest to join this list is Bergvall who was signed by Spurs in the January transfer period of 2024 and was then given on loan for five months to his Swedish club before joining the side on July 1st. Coming from Stockholm, Bergvall progressed through the academy IF Brommapojkarna, and made his debut for Sweden’s second-tier in 2022 during a 1-1 draw against Orgryte IS.
Just five months later, he left his boyhood club to join and made his debut for the top-flight Djurgardens. On May 24th 2023, he made his debut in the Allsvenskan, where the Swedish international impressed everyone with his midfield exploits, leading his side to a 1-0 win against defending champions BK Hacken.
Bergvall became one of the most crucial players in the Djurgardens squad over the coming time and even earned a spot in the Guardian’s Next Generation 2023, named along with Warren Zaire-Emery and Endrick. It was on February 1st that Tottenham signed him for a five-year for a transfer fee of £8.5m.
“It’s a crazy feeling. Ever since I signed for Spurs, this was the dream.” 🤍

Lucas Bergvall’s playing style
He is one of the most complete midfielders without a doubt, and though he plays the no.8 role, his creativity could see him push further into the no.10 role behind the attackers. He has amazing ball control and agility makes him really effective when he is dribbling past his opponents and helps his team move up the field. Along with his strong finishing and mental focus which stands out for his age, his footballing brain makes him lethal.
The 18-year-old constantly has eyes for passes and that further helps him to break the lines fast during counterattack. The Spurs teenager is also good at popping up in the box in order to finish an attack neatly and is also comfortable with a long-range shot from outside the box.
Life at Tottenham of course started slow and has tried to make the most of the limited opportunities in the first team he got during his initial days. So far he has made 22 appearances for the side this season across competition with six starts, slowly becoming an important part of the setup. He has though been given more time in the Cup competitions, making his first start for the Lillywhites in the Carabao Cup game against Coventry City. He also was in the starting squad during the opening Europa League match against Qarabag.
Though in the past he has suffered from making poor decisions and even losing the ball in his haste to everyone. However, his clinical performance against Liverpool on Wednesday in the EFL Cup, where he scored the decisive goal earned him praise from everywhere including team manager Ange Postecoglou who noted his delight at having the Swedish midfielder at his disposal and felt Tottenham could benefit from him for a long time in future. The goal was also the first goal for Spurs that Bergvall has scored.
Bergvall may have finally gone from a highly sought-after footballer from Sweden to one of the regulars in Tottenham. A lot of the onus will be on him to help his side seal the Carabao Cup final when they face Liverpool at Anfield for the second leg of the semifinal.
After a stellar performance against Liverpool including a goal for Tottenham Hotspur during the first leg of the semifinal of the EFL Cup, Lucas Bergvall may have finally made himself a regular in the North London club’s squad.
