New Delhi: Sachin Tanwar made headlines on the first day of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) 2024 auction on Thursday, August 15, held at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai. The 25-year-old Indian player was sold to Tamil Thalaivas for a whopping sum of INR 2.15 crores to become the most expensive pick of this season so far.
Tanwar has now become the second most expensive Indian player in the PKL history after flamboyant raider Pawan Sehrawat. He received bids from Telugu Titans, UP Yoddhas, and Gujarat Giants but Thailvas signed him in the end with others pulling out of the race.
Born on July 19, 1999, in the Bandhbar village of Jhunjhunu district in Rajashtan, Sachin Tanwar was introduced to Kabaddi by his uncle Rakesh Chauhan, who himself was a national-level player during his youth times. Sachin was joined by his elder brother Deepak when he started to play the sport, as per a Sportstar report.
Deepak suffered a ligament tear and missed the chance to be part of the 2015 Junior Asian Championship from the Indian squad, though the tournament was cancelled later. Deepak recommended Sachin’s name to his Rajasthan coach to get into the setup for district and state tournaments. Sachin cleared the trials and that was the beginning of his journey.
He was part of the Rajasthan U-19 team at the age of 17 to play the junior nationals, where he was the top raider. In 2016, he was selected in the Indian squad for the Junior Asian Championship in 2016 in Iran. Sachin, who led the Indian team, returned with a gold after defeating Iran in the final.
Shot to prominence in senior team
Within a year, Sachin found himself in the senior national side with his first task being the Asian Kabaddi Championship in Gorgaon, Iran. Sachin played for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) under coach Manpreet Singh. Manpreet was coach of new entrant Gujarat Giants in PKL 2017 and that’s when he got Sachin signed for a sum of 36 lakh based on his talent.
Sachin made his PKL debut in the season 5, accumulating 173 points from 24 games, including raid 159 points as the Gujarat outfit reached the final. He only bettered his game in the following season with 204 points (190 raid points). He bagged his first Super 10 in a match against Haryana Steelers which followed with another Super 10 in the very next game against Puneri Paltan. In both games, the difference was more than 10 with Gujarat being victorious.
The seventh season wasn’t a great one for the Rajasthan player as he managed to pick 85 points and it saw him part ways with Gujarat Giants and moved to Patna Pirates. The change helped Sachin regain his mojo as he accounted for 181 points from 23 games and played his third final in three seasons.
He bagged 179 points (PKL season 9) and 184 points (PKL season 10) to strike consistency, maintaining his place in the top 10. In the meantime, Sachin was part of Indian team’s triumphant campaigns at Asian Kabaddi Championship 2023 in Busan and Asian Games 2022 (held in 2023) in Hangzhou.
Move to auction on mother’s advice
After spending three seasons with Patna Pirates, Sachin decided to put his name in the PKL auction on the advice of his mother. As his mother wanted him to go to a better place and was delighted after the raider went as the most expensive player in the PKL 2024 auction.
