New Delhi: Thulasimathi Murugesan created history by becoming the first Indian woman para-shuttler to win the silver medal in the badminton SU5 category in the Paralympics. She was defeated by Chinese Yang Qiu Xia 21-17, 21-10. Murugesan was in the lead in the first set with 11-8 but the Chinese player turned things up by winning back-to-back multiple points and won the first set easily. The second set was pure dominance from the Chinese shuttler to win the game easily.
It will be a double-podium for India as Manisha Ramadass has clinched the bronze medal in the same SU5 category in badminton. Murugesan will be unhappy with her performance in the finals as she was leading 11-8 in the first set but then crashed at the crucial points and ultimately lost the match.
Thulasimathi Murugesan’s life journey
Thulasimathi Murugesan became the first woman from India to win a silver medal in the Paralympics in any category of badminton. Murugesan was born with a birth disorder named congenital deformity. She lost her left thumb finger. Her life tragedy didn’t stop there as in her adulthood she met with a disastrous accident that affected her left hand again and left her limiting her life with only one hand.
Murugesan was playing badminton at the age of seven and all her tragedies didn’t stop her from quitting the sport. She won three medals at the Asian Paralympics, a gold medal in the singles event, a silver medal in the women’s double, and a bronze medal in the mixed doubles.

Murugesan defeated Ramadass 23-21, 21-17 in the semi-final of the SU5 badminton category. It was a hard-fought contest between Indians and now Ramadass bagged the bronze medal by defeating Catherine Rosengren 21-12, 21-8 in the bronze medal match very easily, and now both Indians will be on the podium with a bronze and a silver medal.
