New Delhi: Medals continued to come in for the Indian Paralympic contingent at the Paris Paralympics 2024 after para shuttlers Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s singles SU5 class on Monday at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

Thulasimathi Murugesan, the top seed from Tamil Nadu, missed the opportunity to bag first gold medal in para badminton by a women shuttler. Despite starting her final against Yang Qui Xia of China, the 22-year-old Indian wasn’t able to hold the advantage as the Chinese shuttler played a brilliant style of badminton to snatch the win in first game.

The second game seemed a cakewalk for the Chinese para shuttler after winning five straight points and run through the Indian youngster with a 11-point lead as the match was wrapped in exactly 30 minutes.

In the bronze medal match of the same event, Manisha Ramadass cut short her work against Canada’s Catherine Rosengreen in a lopsided contest that finished with scores of 21-12, 21-8 in just 25 minutes.

This was the first medals won by Indian women para shuttlers after the sporting discipline was introduced in Paralympics in the 2020 Tokyo Games three years ago. India won three medals at Tokyo all coming by male para shuttlers, including gold medals from Pramod Bhagat (SL3) and Krishna Nagar (SH6).

Manisha lost to Thulasimathi Murugesan in the all-India semifinal in straight sets by 21-15, 21-7.

How many medals India has won after para shuttlers double-podium finish?

India has bagged a total of 11 medals, including two gold, four silver and five bronze medals. Earlier in the day, para shuttler Nitesh Kumar won gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 category. This was the second gold after para shooter Avani Lekhara defended her gold medal in women’s 10m air rifle SH1 event.

Young sprinter Preethi Pal has bagged two bronze medals in the T35 100m and 200m as she became the first Indian to bag medals in track events at the Paralympics.
