New Delhi: Team India’s preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy started with a series loss against Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue lost the three-match ODI series against Charith Asalanka and Co. by 2-0. Team India failed to chase down the target in any of the ODIs.
The Men in Blue have only one ODI series left before the start of the Champions Trophy but many questions still need answers. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer both made a comeback in the Sri Lanka ODIs after performing well in the 2023 ODI World Cup but failed to impress fans and management.
The top order is settled for now with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. But would the management want to look at Yashasvi Jaiswal as an option to open with Rohit in the upcoming Champions Trophy?
Jaiswal has done exceptionally well in the Test and T20I cricket. He scored 1028 runs in the 9 Test matches at an average of 68.53 while in T20Is, the left-handed batter has scored 723 runs with a strike rate of 164.32 but he is yet to make his ODI debut. But Rohit and Shubman’s duo has provided India strong starts in the previous ODIs, including the ODI World Cup 2023.
‘I’m pretty confident it’s going to be Rohit and Shubman’: Dinesh Karthik
Former India batter Dinesh Karthik said that if Shubman failed to perform then Jaiswal has a great opportunity to be the backup opener.
“Yes, Jaiswal has a great opportunity to be the backup opener and will get his chance if Shubman doesn’t perform as expected. But given India’s current squad, it’s the more experienced Shubman Gill who will likely get the nod ahead of the young southpaw” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
He also said that Team India will play three matches against England at home and he is confident that Rohit and Shubman going to open in the Champions Trophy.
“In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, they are just going to be playing three more games against England at home in February. So, I am pretty confident it’s going to be Rohit and Shubman opening in the Champions Trophy,” he added.
Former India cricketer talked about who will open for India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 50-over event is set to be played in Pakistan in February-March next year. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
