Why Australia yearn to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, explains skipper Cummins

New Delhi: After winning the ODI and T20 World Cups and the Ashes series in recent times, Australia are very keen to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to compete the bucket list of silverware, says skipper Pat Cummins.

Australia have lost all four previous BGT series against India, two at home (2018-19, 2020-21) and two away (2017 and 2023) and trail the ongoing five-match series 0-1 after a 295-mauling at Perth.

They would look for a turnaround in the second Test that begins in Adelaide on Friday. It is a day-night match where pink balls will be used. Australia have an impressive record of winning all the seven pink ball Tests they have played so far.

“For half of the (Australian) change room, we haven’t won the Border Gavaskar Trophy. It is one last thing to tick off for a lot of us. Almost every challenge that we faced in last few years, we have stepped up and done well.”

“I think we need to do that for another home summer and series. From two-three season thing, it has suddenly been a half a generation thing.”

Four surviving members of last Aus win over India

Only four members of the current Australian Test squad were part of their last series win over India in 204-15 by a 2-0 margin. Among the quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, and Nathan Lyon, three would be in action at Adelaide.

Hazlewood has been sidelined with injury with Scott Boland taking his place in the playing XI. Cummins played down talks of Australia being under pressure and backed the home team to go level in the pink ball game.

“I don’t think it’s pressure. You are playing at home and you want to do well. We know they (India) are a really strong side and lot of us were part of those recent three series (defeats).

“Yeah, it’s a big series and kind of not looking too far in the past. And every summer, when we play against them we want to do well,” the pacer said.
