Why did legendary pacer Wasim Akram decline Pakistan Cricket Board CEO post?

New Delhi: Legendary pacer Wasim Akram has declined to take up the Pakistan Cricket Board (CEO) post offered to him. According to reports from Pakistan cricket, the veteran pacer was approached to serve as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or the advisor to the chairman but the former player vehemently denied to take up the role.

Akram, who is considered to be one of the best in the game, had lashed out at the PCB following the team’s dismal show at the T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan suffered a shocking loss to USA and then went down against arch-rivals India to bow out of the showpiece event in the group stage itself. The veteran had called out the uncertainty within the board and the team and demanded a revamp.

Why did Akram decline the offer?

Since the apex board is seeking a formidable figure to lead the cricketing matters going forward, so they approached Akram with the intention that he would be the ideal candidate to serve as the CEO but he declined the offer. If reports are to be believed, the 58-year-old, sought familial commitments and declined the role at PCB which is based out of Lahore. Incidentally, Akram resides in Karachi and frequently travels to Australia.

The move from PCB came as Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is under immense pressure with criticism coming in from all corners on his lack of full commitment to cricketing matters. For the unversed, Naqvi also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior.

After Akram’s refusal, the Pakistan Cricket Board reached out to another veteran of the team, Waqar Younis, who resides in Australia, for the same position. The former Pakistan coach has reportedly shown interest in handling the responsibilities and also agreed to return to Lahore for further developments. However, there is no official confirmation from either PCB or Younis regarding the same.
