New Delhi: Team India won the first Test against Bangladesh by 280 runs and will look to dominate the second Test in Kanpur to seal the series. Rohit Sharma has continued to lead the Test squad but the BCCI and team management didn’t announce vice-captain for the Test series.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was Team India’s vice-captain during the five-match home Test series against England in February 2024. Shubman Gill was appointed vice-captain in the limited-overs format after the T20 World Cup.
‘We have got a lot of IPL captains in this team’: Abhishek Nayar
India’s newly-appointed assistant coach Abhishek Nayar explained the reason behind it and said that there are a lot of IPL captains in the Indian team and the future of the Test team looks good.
“I think we need to understand that we have got a lot of IPL captains in this team. When you talk about the likes of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, hopefully a Yashasvi going forward. There are a lot of players who have led their franchises,” Abhishek Nayar told the media on the eve of the 2nd Test in Kanpur.

He further added that the likes of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are not youngsters anymore in terms of the amount of cricket they have played and they have the leadership qualities that are required. Nayar also said that the process of learning speeds up due to the presence of senior players like Virat and Rohit.
“I wouldn’t look at them as youngsters any more. Yes, they are youngsters in terms of age and the amount of cricket they have played. But, I think overall, mentally and in their development as a cricketer, I think they have the leadership qualities that are required. You don’t need to have a vice-captain that should be designated” Nayar said.
“I think overall, the thought process of these youngsters if of a senior player. It’s of someone who has played a lot of cricket. With the likes of Virat, Rohit in the dressing room, it speedens that process where you are learning a lot faster on the go. I feel our future and all the youngsters are in great hands” he added.
Bumrah frontrunner to lead India after Rohit?
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is next in line to lead Team India in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma. Bumrah also expressed his desire to lead the team during an event. The pacer has captained the Men in a Test match against England when Rohit was unavailable due to an injury.
