New Delhi: India and Sri Lanka were involved in a thrilling match in the first One-Day International in Colombo on Friday, which resulted in a tie. Thanks to the fighting spirit of the home side who managed to bowl out India for 230 despite 13 balls were left in the mediocre chase.
Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga (3 for 58), Charith Asalanka (3 for 30), and Dunith Wellalage (2 for 39) were crafty with the ball to deceive the Indian batting unit even though they were in a complete control of the chase at one stage. The twists and turns kept flowing in with the match set for a classic culmination.
Axar Patel’s dismissal in the 41st over, when India was 34 runs away from the target, was one of the turning points followed by Shivam Dube’s leg-before-wicket decision turning in Sri Lanka’s favour via DRS. India still had the opportunity with Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj required to plunder a single to cross that thin line. However, Asalanka’s incisive line and Arshdeep’s temptation to slog put things in line for the hosts to walk away with more than a satisfactory tie.
WE HAVE A TIE IN COLOMBO 🙌

One thing that many users might think of is why there wasn’t any super over to decide the final result. For the uninitiated, a super over is not a standard part of ODI cricket. The traditional white-ball format determines result withing the stipulated overs (50 overs game) with knockout matches in a tournament being an exceptional case.
Unlike the T20I format where Super Over plays a decisive role to announce the winner, the match is considered tie in ODIs if both teams finish with same number of runs.
How many Super Overs have been played in ODIs?
The 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand was forced to a super over after both teams scored 241 in their respective innings. This was the first instance when an ODI game was called to be decided in a six-ball contest for each side. However, the summit clash wasn’t decided by the super over after both teams made 15 runs off six balls, respectively. England took the crown home after scoring outwitting the Black Caps on the boundary count rule.
There are two more instances of a Super Over in ODIs. Pakistan and Zimbabwe are the only teams to play a super over in ODIs in a bilateral series. The third ODI in Rawalpindi saw a super over after both teams were locked at 278 in the allocated 50 overs. Zimbabwe went on to win the super over with just three runs to chase, cutting short the work in three deliveries.
West Indies and the Netherlands were involved in the last super over affair in an ODI match. During the ICC 2023 World Cup qualifiers, Netherlands managed to level an arduous total of 374 set by the West Indies in the first innings. Dutch all-rounder Logan van Beek smashed counterpart Jason Holder 30 runs in an over to put his side in a commanding position before they actually sealed it.
