Why Vantika Agrawal pulled out from President Cup in Uzbekistan? Here’s what the controversy is about

New Delhi: International Master Vantika Agarwal on Sunday made a sudden announcement over the decision to withdraw from the third President Cup A in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 22-year-old took the call citing the arbiter’s incautious approach toward her third round result.

The President Cup is a nine-round event, scheduled from November 20 to 30 in the national capital city of Uzbekistan. The first round took place on Thursday and the third round was held on Saturday. Vantika played against local player Mukkhammadzokhid Suyarov in the third round.

Much to the Indian’s surprise, she was declared as the loser even after the game ended as a draw, as alleged by the Delhi-based chess player.

“My game in 3rd round of President’s Cup in Uzbekistan ended as a draw. I submitted the scoresheet with the right result. Then when I checked the pairing (for round 4) it was published as a loss for me. I immediately mailed them and informed them but they said that it’s FIDE’s rule that they can’t do anything,” Vantika wrote in an Instagram story.

“So I want to ask FIDE why they made such a rule. If it’s arbiter’s mistake why should I suffer I have spent lots of money to play this tournament,” she added.

Vantika feels helpless and takes a tough call

The request made by Vantika for FIDE’s intervention was on Saturday, but when the Indian chess Olympiad gold medallist couldn’t find any help to bail out, she announced to pull out from the tournament as a matter of consequence.

“I have withdrawn from the tournament. I can’t continue playing in a tournament where wrong result and pairings has been published because of arbiter’s fault and there is no way to correct it inspite of immediate information. There is no guarantee that this will not happen again,” Vantika wrote on her X handle on Sunday evening.

Vantika recently finished joint-third at the Tata Steel Chess India event in Kolkata. She participated in the blitz and third in the rapid section, which was a 10-player competition.
