Will Amit Rohidas play men’s hockey semifinal after getting red card against Great Britain?

New Delhi: Standing on the cusp of history, India face Germany in a mouthwatering men’s hockey semifinal against Germany at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Asian giants edged past Great Britain in a thrilling shootout (4-2) following a 1-1 draw in regulation time to book their second successive semifinal spot in the Olympics. India’s performance was filled with grit, determination and it was their fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude that helped them cross the line.

India had to play with 10 men for more than 40 minutes against a rampant British side, which piled immense pressure on Harmanpreet Singh’s men. Despite the one-man disadvantage, the Indian defence, led by veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, produced a remarkable rearguard action, to thwart the Britishers.

Seasoned player Amit Rohidas was given the marching order in the second quarter after his stick hit a rival player. Though the on-field referee recommended a 10-minute yellow card, the TV umpire, after watching replays, deemed it dangerous play and instructed the on-field referee to change the decision and give a red card to the Indian player.

Following the match, question marks were raised on Rohidas’ fate for the semifinal clash against Germany. Will he play or will he be suspended?

Will Amit Rohidas play in the men’s hockey semifinal vs Germany?

After finding Rohidas breached the ‘Code of Conduct breach’, FIH has suspended Rohidas for a match, which means he will miss the semifinal against Germany on Tuesday. As a result, India will have only 15 players available for the clash.

“Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4. The suspension affects match No. 35 (India’s semi-final match against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of 15 players only,” a FIH statement read.

While the official status stands as ‘suspended’, based on India’s protest, the FIH Disciplinary Committee can reverse the ruling or uphold it. However, the chances of that scenario are very slim.
