New Delhi: With the signing of an MOU between the Advertising Standards Council of India and the gaming industry bodies like the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFS), the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), And the E-Gaming Federation (EGF), the gaming industry will finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The online gaming industry had been fighting of challenges arising over illegal and betting advertisements by offshore entities. In other words, compliance will be strengthened of the Real Gaming Industry by identifying illegal ads.
New MOU combats illegal online gaming advertisements in India
Speaking to News9 Sports, Neil Castelino, CEO, the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports, said: “We hope this collaboration will ensure that Indian consumers are not exposed to illegal platforms in the guise of online gaming while promoting responsible advertising practices.”
India’s fantasy sports industry faces a crucial moment. While offering unparalleled interactivity and benefiting from judicial clarity, it must navigate challenges to ensure sustainable growth. Tax changes are impacting subscriptions, and the industry must avoid becoming a game of chance rather than skill.
Given India’s generally weak sporting performance (excluding cricket), fostering audience engagement through fantasy sports is a valuable opportunity.
Cricket has shown how fantasy sports can bridge the gap between advertisers and consumers. Emerging leagues in sports like kabaddi also offer potential. However, ethical growth hinges on focusing on international events less susceptible to match-fixing and transparent rules governing user interaction with those events.
The future of responsible gaming advertising in India
The key is emphasizing skill. By rewarding knowledge and analysis, fantasy sports create a more informed audience, benefiting both the fantasy and real-world sports ecosystems. Growing user numbers signal a wider growth in India’s sports culture, crucial for diversifying interest beyond cricket.
Over-reliance on cricket concentrates advertising, hindering other sports’ development. Growing fan bases for diverse sports enable monetization through viewership and advertising, attracting talent and improving India’s international sporting performance. This creates a virtuous cycle.
However, platforms must exercise self-restraint. Prioritising skill-based gameplay and reducing cricket dependence is crucial. While cricket provided a successful foundation, the future of Indian fantasy sports depends on nurturing broader sporting interests.
This balanced approach is essential for a thriving sports landscape and improved international outcomes. Only by focusing on genuine engagement and diversification can the industry fulfil its potential to contribute to a healthier and more successful Indian sports culture.
With the IPL starting on March 22, the creation of a safer and trusting gaming landscape will be a safe bet.
The Advertising Standards Council of India’s MOU with major gaming bodies (AIGF, FIFS, EGF) marks a significant step towards curbing illegal online gaming ads and promoting responsible advertising practices. This collaboration aims to protect Indian consumers from fraudulent platforms while fostering the growth of the legitimate fantasy sports industry. The focus is on emphasizing skill-based gameplay, diversifying beyond cricket, and ensuring sustainable growth amidst tax changes and challenges to maintaining ethical standards.
