New Delhi: The World Championship of Legends (WCL) has racked up record unique viewership in India, thereby becoming one of the most-watched leagues in the country. The competition, which saw the participation of yesteryear cricketer’s, became an instant hit among the sea of cricket fans in the nation in it’s year of inception.
The blockbuster India vs Australia semifinal clash saw World Cup winners Yuvraj Singh, Irfan and Yusuf Pathan and Harbhajan Singh weaving their magic once again. Followed by the clash against Australia, the India stars locked horns with arch-rivals Pakistan which saw more than 30 million spectators recorded digitally. The Indian legends ended up clinching the final and lifting the inaugural WCL trophy.
Record viewership for the league
The WCL garnered around 145 million viewers in India alone and out these, 75 million unique viewers tuned in on Star Sports. Additionally, close to 70 million engaged through the digital broadcast platforms.
Meanwhile, neighbouring nation Pakistan too recorded impressive numbers with the viewership approaching 40 million on the digital platform. The TV ratings for the finals rose to 4.9, bringing the total to 50 million viewers in the country. The league in its inaugural edition did not only achieve success in the sub-continent but in the UK as well, the league got great viewership, with average daily audience surpassing many concurrent cricket tournaments.
The CEO and founder of league Harshit Tomar expressed his happiness saying that they were thrilled with the kind of response received.
“We are thrilled with the overwhelming response from fans around the world. This milestone is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved in making the WCL a world-class event,” he said.
The league, which drew more than 300 million viewers globally, aims to grow further in the coming years.
