New Delhi: Climate change and global warming are threatening the very existence of this planet. One of the main reasons, or possibly the most crucial reason behind climate change is the degradation of the environment which is becoming increasingly polluted. Every year on September 26, World Environmental Health Day is observed. The day focuses on the need to foster a safe and healthy environment and fight for clean air, water, sanitation, waste management and pollution control. Our well-being depends on the health of our planet and that makes this day extremely important.
World Environmental Health Day: How and why did the day originate?
In 2011, the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) established World Environmental Health Day to focus on the intricate relationship between human health and the environment. Our mental and physical health depends on the state of our environment. The World Health Organization states that we could prevent around one-quarter of global disease by creating healthier environments. For the sake of the health of human beings, the world needs clean air and drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, sustainable agriculture, and conservation of nature among other things.
The state of the environment dictates our health considerably. Hence, we must keep the environment healthy to prevent environmental hazards, be it physical, chemical, or biological that can lead to illnesses like cancer, respiratory disorders, asthma, and allergies. Hence, a better awareness about the health of the environment is needed and as the importance of protecting it from further harm.
World Environmental Health Day: What is the theme this year?
The theme of World Environmental Health Day is “Environmental Health: Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.” Climate Change and disaster risks are threatening sustainable development, the health of humans and the efforts to reduce poverty. We should not undo the good work done to improve the environment, and hence, there is a need to build resilient and sustainable communities to address both climate change and disaster risks. The theme highlights the link between climate change, environmental health, and disaster risk management and calls for the creation of resilient communities by addressing the health risks that climate change and natural disasters pose.
