New Delhi: The Rann Utsav is a carnival of music and dance and showcases the culture of Gujarat. Every year, the festival starts in November and the celebration goes till February. The festival is a unique manifestation of the varied cultural ethos of the region and is famous for its ethnic flavor and celebrative zest. One can see the creative ingenuity of the artisans and craftspeople in the festival along with folk music and performances, which represents the culture and communities of the region.

The festival takes place in the Dhordo village of Gujarat’s Kachchh district. This time, the festival is taking place from December 1, 2024 to February 28, 2025. If you are someone going to Kachchh to experience the Rann Utsav, then there are some historical places in the district you can visit to experience the heritage of the region.

Historical places you can explore in Kachchh

Kachchh Museum

Established by Maharao Khengarji in 1877, it is the oldest museum in Gujarat. It has the largest existing collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions and also examples of the extinct Kachchhi script. There is a section in the museum which is dedicated to tribal cultures and there are many examples of ancient artifacts, crafts, folk arts and information about tribal people. The museum also has paintings, musical instruments, arms, embroidery, precious metalwork and sculpture.

Dholavira

Dholavira is an archaeological site at Khadirbet in Kachchh’s Bhachau Taluka. Also known locally as Kotada timba, the site contains ruins of a city of the ancient Indus Valley civilization. It has been repeatedly affected by earthquakes, including a particularly severe one around 2600 BCE. It is one of the five largest Harappan sites and most prominent archaeological sites in India belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization.

Prag Mahal

The Prag Mahal is a 19th-century palace in Kachchh district. It was commissioned by Rao Pragmalji II and its construction started in 1865. It was designed by Colonel Henry St Clair Wilkins and the design is said to be Italian Gothic style and many Italian artisans were involved in its construction. It was built in the middle of Bhuj next to the Aina Mahal.

Chatardi

In local language, Chatardi means umbrella. At this site in Bhuj, you will see several royal umbrellas which the kings constructed to protect and provide shade to the dead royals. While earthquakes have reduced many of them to ruins, those of Lakhpatji, Raydhanji II and Desarji are still quite intact. It is a very quiet site and is very peaceful.

Vijaya Vilas Palace

Vijaya Vilas Palace is a summer palace of Maharao of Kutch located on the beach of Mandvi. It was built during reign of Maharao Shri Khengarji III, the Maharao of Kachchh, as a summer resort for his son and heir to the kingdom, the Yuvraj Shri Vijayaraji. Its construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1929. The palace is built with red sandstone. It has all the elements of Rajput architecture and draws largely on the plan of palaces of Orchha and Datia.

Sharad Baug Palace

Also known as Rajavatika, it was the residence of the king till 1991 when the last king of Kachchh, Madansingh died. It has been converted into a museum and its gardens have many flowering and medicinal plants. As a result, the palace grounds have become a favourite resting place of the migratory birds.

Aina Mahal

The Aina Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) is an 18th-century palace located next to the Prag Mahal. It was built by Rao Lakhpatji in around 1750. It was designed by Ram Singh Malam in the local style and decorated it in the European style with glass, mirrors and tiles. In 1977, the palace was converted into a museum.

Lakhpat

Lakhpat is a town in Kachchh district which is enclosed by 7 km-long, 18th century fort walls. It is named after Rao Lakha who ruled in Sindh. In ancient times, Lakhpat was a very important trading post connecting Gujarat to Sindh. However, by the early 19th century, Lakhpat had lost its importance and was reduced to a deserted town.
