New Delhi: Former India batter Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from domestic and international cricket on Saturday, August 24. The Indian opener played his last international match during the ODI series against Bangladesh in 2022. He shared a long video message on social media and thanked his fans for all the love and support throughout his career.
Dhawan made his international debut in the ODI series against Australia in 2010 in Visakhapatnam but didn’t have a great start to his career. However, after some failures at the start of his career, Dhawan made an outstanding comeback in the team in 2013 and sealed his spot permanently across all formats of the game.
Dhawan scripted history by scoring the fastest century on Test debut in just 85 balls. He also scored the most runs in the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017 and won the ‘golden bat’. Dhawan was also the highest run scorer for India in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
He played 167 ODI matches for India and scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11, including seven hundreds and five fifties. He also scored 1759 runs in 68 T20I matches at a strike rate of 126.36 including 11 fifties. He has scored 2315 runs in 34 Test matches at an average of 40.61.

Many current and former cricketers congratulated Dhawan for his outstanding career. Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri also posted a heartfelt message for Shikhar Dhawan on his X and wrote “Enjoy your retirement, Shiki Boy! You brought me so much joy and entertainment during my 7 years as coach and director. Your match-winning innings in ICC tournaments, Asia Cups, and that unforgettable knock in Galle will always be remembered. You’re still young and have plenty of ways to contribute to the sport. God bless”.
