Young employee’s death: EY India chairman vows to create ‘harmonious workplace’

A day after the government ordered an enquiry into the death of the young professional working for EY, one of the big four accountings firms, that was linked to work-related stress by her mother, Rajiv Memani, chairman of the firm’s India operations, said that he is not going to rest until he has built a harmonious workplace in the company. In a social media post, Memani also regretted not being able to attend the funeral of the employee that shocked many across the country.

According to reports, no employee of the firm attended the funeral of the employee.

Became CA in 2023

The victim, Anna Sebastian Perayil had qualified as a chartered accountant in 2023 and used to work for EY at its Pune office. She passed away in July and her mother alleged in a letter that she shot off to Memani that her daughter suffered “backbreaking” workload. The resultant stress impacted her “physically, emotionally, and mentally” said her mother.

“I have conveyed my deepest condolences to the family, although nothing can fill the void in their lives… I truly regret the fact that we missed being present at Anna’s funeral. This is completely alien to our culture. It has never happened before; it will never happen again,” Memani wrote in his post.

Minister’s reaction

The government responded to the shock that the incident triggered across social media and intervened. On September 19, the ministry of labour and employment ordered an inquiry in Anna Sebastain Perayil’s death. Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje said she was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss” of the young professional.

“It has always been very important to us to create a healthy workplace and we attach the highest importance to the well-being of our people…. I would like to affirm that the well-being of our people is my top-most priority and I will personally champion this objective,” Memani added in his post.

The ministry of labour and employment has already directed a probe into the death of the 26-year-old CA whose death has been linked to “unsafe and exploitative work” environment.  Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
