FIDE rubbishes Kramnik, Carlsen’s ‘irrelevant’ claims on Gukesh vs Ding chess final

New Delhi: The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has downplayed the criticism and rubbished former champion Vladimir Kramnik’s ‘deliberately lost’ claim on D Gukesh vs Ding Liren world chess championship final in Singapore. After India’s D Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion after getting the better of Chinese Liren in the final, former world champions questioned the game for its quality, with Kramnik even claiming that it was ‘childish’ of Liren to make a mistake and lose the game.

He even went on to call Ding’s mistake ‘deliberate’ and demanded an investigation. Amid heavy criticism, FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich has addressed the concerns and criticism of the former veterans saying that mistakes do happen in sports as they are part and parcel of the game. He even said that fingers should not be pointed at players of such a calibre for an error in a high-pressure mental game.

Ding commits mistake in final stages

In the final stages of the 14th and last match, defending champion Ding committed a mistake that allowed the Indian teenager to turn the tables in the final. Had the Chinese ace not mistakenly, the match was headed towards inevitable tiebreak.

“Sports is about mistakes, without mistakes, there would be no goals in football. Every sportsman makes mistakes but that’s what we are excited about, whether the opponent can find the way to use a mistake,” Dvorkovich said during the closing ceremony of the championship. He congratulated Gukesh and Liren for their performance in the showpiece.

Earlier former world champions Kramnik took to social media site X to make his comments about the final match. In his reaction, Kramnik wrote on ‘X’, “No comment. Sad. End of chess as we know it. Never yet has a WC title been decided by such a childish one-move blunder.”

Meanwhile, Norway’s Magnus Carlsen too was critical of the quality on display in earlier rounds, saying, “This does not look like a game between two World Championship contenders. It just looks like maybe the second round or third round of an open tournament.”
