New Delhi: Experienced batter KL Rahul will miss Karnataka’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Punjab starting in Bengaluru on January 23. Rahul, who is recovering from an elbow niggle, was not picked in the Karnataka squad for their penultimate Elite Group C match which will feature star batter Shubman Gill in the opposition’s side.
It was reported earlier by PTI that Rahul is likely to miss the match against Punjab and could be back in action for Karnataka’s last league match against Haryana on January 30. Rahul has been named in India’s ODI squad for the three-match home series against England, starting on February 6, and the ICC Champions Trophy, beginning on February 19.
Mayank Agarwal to lead 16-member Karnataka squad
Opening batter Mayank Agarwal will captain the 16-member side that also features India pacer Prasidh Krishna and top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a fifty and a century in three Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures recently.
Shreyas Gopal, who played a key role in Karnataka’s victorious campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy by taking 18 wickets, has been promoted to the position of vice-captain.
Earlier in the day, India captain Rohit Sharma and rising opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal were included in Mumbai’s squad for their Ranji fixture against Jammu and Kashmir, starting January 23 at MCA-BKC Ground in Mumbai.
The announcement means that Rohit is set to play a Ranji Trophy match for the first time in almost a decade.
Seasoned batter Ajinkya Rahane will continue to lead the side. After Team India’s horror tour of Australia, BCCI has made it mandatory for the players to play domestic matches.
