New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma is set to play his first Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai in a decade. His last domestic game was against Uttar Pradesh in November 2015. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has made special security and seating arrangements for Rohit’s Ranji Trophy game.
Defending champions Mumbai will start the Ranji Trophy second leg against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in BKC on Thursday. Rohit was included in Mumbai’s 17-member squad along with Yashasvi Jaiswal after the Indian skipper confirmed his participation in domestic cricket.
The MCA expects a heavy crowd turnout at the BKC for Rohit’s Ranji comeback match. However, only up to 500 people can be accommodated at the venue where the Mumbai team has regularly played its league games in the Ranji Trophy. “Additional security has been arranged and we have also increased the sitting capacity of fans up to 500” a MCA official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
‘Happy to know Rohit confirmed his Ranji participation’: Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was very happy to learn that Rohit was returning to the Ranji Trophy and said that it’s a good thing because he didn’t get runs in Australia and Rohit knows he needs to spend time out in the middle. “How much net practice you have or however many throwdowns you face, batting in a game, feeling the ball in the middle of the bat, knowing that a mistake will send you back to the pavilion, and then still scoring runs is a big, big difference,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.
Mumbai is placed third in Elite Group A, while Baroda is in first place and Jammu and Kashmir are in second place. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side needs to bring their A-game if they want to advance further and defend their Ranji title.
