New Delhi: Joshua Kimmich is close to extending his stay at Bayern Munich as confirmed by the club’s sporting director Christoph Freund who mentioned that an agreement would be reached soon. According to reports from media outlet The Athletic in January, Bayern’s main priority was to extend the German international’s stay at the club with his current contract ending in June 2025.

Kimmich came to Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015 and extended his contract with the Bavarian team in 2021 summer. Freund after Bayern’s goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday noted that the club was in talks with Kimmich and felt that both parties needed to have “planning security”.

On Friday, Bayern announced a new contract for Jama Musiala for five-and-a-half-year which comes right after both Alphonso Davies and Manuel Neuer had their stay extended at the club. Max Eberl, director of sport with Bayern recently noted that securing the future services of a first-team trio would have indicated Kimmich in the club’s interest in retaining their top talents.

During Eberl’s interaction with Sky Sports Germany noted that after retaining their top three players, they have shown Bayern’s every intention of keeping Kimmich with the team and hoped that he was being seen as a potential captain for the side when Neuer steps down. Eberl further noted that the team was interested in retaining top-quality players and Kimmich too was interested in winning the Champions League with the side.

Since joining Bayern, Kimmich has played 423 times for the club, scoring 43 times and has won eight Bundesliga titles along with the Champions League in 2020. Following Ilkay Gundogan’s international retirement, the 30-year-old was handed over Germany’s captaincy who is known for his ability to play defensive midfield and as at right back.

Elbert further confirmed that for Eric Dier, Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller who are also at the end of their term in the coming summer, contract extension options will be evaluated post-Champions League playoff game against Celtic, where Bayern are ahead following a 2-1 win in the first leg. With the draw against Leverkusen, Bayern are eight points clear at the top from the defending champions.
