New Delhi: MS Dhoni might return as the skipper of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their home game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. The legendary CSK player is expected to captain the side if regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad fails to recover from an elbow injury sustained during the team’s last match against Rajasthan Royals (RR).
On the eve of the IPL match, CSK’s batting coach Michael Hussey said that Gaikwad’s fitness would be assessed during the training session and a final decision will be taken on the day of the match. When Hussey was asked about that whether the team has thought of a stand-in captain, he hinted that a ‘young man behind the stumps’ will possibly be stepping in to lead for Saturday’s match.
Ruturaj unfit despite week-long break
Ruturaj suffered a blow to his elbow while he was batting against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati on Sunday. Despite a break for a week, the young skipper has not become fully fit for the high-octane clash against Delhi Capitals, who have been unbeaten thus far. Hussey further said that they haven’t thought of the captain but also confirmed that Stephen Fleming and Gaikwad would have discussed about the same.
‘But we’ve got some young guy coming through. He’s behind the stumps. Maybe he can do a good job, Hussey quipped. I’m not sure. He’s got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it. But to be honest, I’m not exactly sure,’ he added.
Dhoni last captained the Super Kings during their title-winning campaign in 2023. The CSK veteran then handed over the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been leading the side since the 2024 IPL season.
