T20 World Cup: In a league of his own, Rohit Sharma sets three records in India vs Australia game

New Delhi: Rohit Sharma smashed three batting records in India’s T20 World Cup game against Australia in a Super Eights game of the T20 World Cup Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, on Monday.

The India skipper bludgeoned a 41-ball 92 as India posted a 205 for five in their final Super Eights game of the tournament at Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.

India lost the toss and then VIrat Kohli for nought but Rohit remained unperturbed and blasted eight sixes and seven fours during an exhibition of clean hitting.

He targetted star Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc, blasting 29 runs in his second over, i ncluding four sixes and a four to set the of India’s innings.

And by the time Starc returned to the bowling attack and bowled out Rohit in the 12h over, he has made severe damage, striking at a rate of 224.39.

In the prcess, he became the first player to smash over 200 sixes in T20Is and now has the most number of sixes against an opponent in international cricket (132 vs Australia).

Goes past Babar Azam

With 4165 runs, the right hander also became the leading run scorer in T20Is, ahead of Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (4145) and Virat Kohli (4103).

He also struck the fastest fifty in the 2024 T20 World Cup, taking 19 balls. His 92 is the second highest individual score for India in T20 World Cups after Suresh Raina’s 101 against South Africa at Gros Islet in 2010.

Rohit has always stressed that he wants his fellow batters to bat fearlessly and try to dominate the bowlers in T20Is and led by example on Monday.

He identified the need to counter attack once Jodh Hazlewood dismissed Virat Kohli for a duck. Had Rohit played cautiously, India wouldn’t have scored much in the powerplay overs.

It could have swung the momentum towards the Aussies and denied I dia the boost needed to post a big score after being put into bat.

But Kohli’s aggressiveness ensured that India shook off the disappointmrnt of Kohli’s continued failure to post a big score.
