Rohit Sharma announces retirement from T20Is after breaking myriad of records in T20 WC final

New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 Internationals after guiding the team to its second World Cup in the format, describing it as the perfect time to ‘say goodbye’. This was after his long-time teammate Virat Kohli brought down curtains on his fabled career minutes after India defeated South Africa by seven runs at the Kensington Oval in the final.

India clinched their historic second T20 World Cup title after edging past South Africa in a thrilling summit clash in Barbados. The final match turned out to the most exciting affair in the entire showpiece event as it went down to the last over with valiant Proteas choking once again after being in a good position to lift the crown.

With India clinching the a title-winning victory, Rohit added a major accolade of leading the Men in Blue to the historic second title. While the ‘Hitman’ failed to deliver with the bat after initial two boundaries, he did his best by applying good tactical and captaincy skills on the field, which helped India snatch a close victory.

Enroute to the final match of the showpiece event, Rohit was on the cusp of breaking a lot of records as the captain of India, which he eventually broke after the team had the last laugh.

First captain to win 50 T20Is

Rohit became the first skipper to lead his team to 50 T20I wins. Rohit had 49 wins in his kitty before the final clash, one more than Babar Azam, who holds the second position with 48 wins and the Indian skipper completed his 50th victory with the World Cup final triumph against South Africa.

First captain to win T20 WC with 100 percent win record

Adding another feather to his cap, Rohit became the first-ever captain to clinch the T20 World Cup with 100 percent win record, making India the first team to achieve this elusive landmark. Back in the 2007 T20 World Cup, which India won, they had lost one game against New Zealand in the group stage of the event.

First Indian player to win T20 WC twice

Rohit became the first player in Indian cricket to win the T20 World Cup title twice. While the Hitman was part of the world cup winning team back in 2007 under the leadership of MS Dhoni, he successful completed a double after leading India to victory in the 2024 edition.
