New Delhi: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and had the perfect ending to their T20I career.
Rohit was the leading run-getter of the team, scoring 257 runs in 8 matches while Kohli scored 76 runs in the final and was the player of the Match. The two Indian stalwarts cried on each other’s shoulders after India’s victory.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has already confirmed that the senior players will participate in the Champions Trophy and World Test Championship final in 2025 with Rohit Sharma leading the side. But their participation in the ODI World Cup 2027 is in doubt as both players will be touching 40 during the time of the event.
Former India cricketer, Amit Mishra who is making headlines for his controversial statements said that the two-star cricketers are not in contention to play the next ODI World Cup.
“In another 2-3 years. Playing the World Cup [2027] looks tough. He has 3-4 years of cricket left but for India not much. He will retire and continue playing the IPL. Same with Virat Kohli” Mishra said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube show ‘Unplugged’.
He also said that if they don’t retire how will the new player get the chance of playing? “How else will new players get in? One is 37, the other will turn 36 soon. They’ll be 38-39 in the next two years. At max, 40. That’s usually how long cricketers play” he added.
After winning the T20 World Cup, both players are on a break. Kohli is in London with his family and Rohit recently attended the semi-final match of Wimbledon 2024 between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev before leaving for the USA where he attended a couple of events.
Rohit and Kohli rested for the ODI series against Sri Lanka
Both the star Indian cricketers have demanded rest from the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. But the new head coach Gautam Gambhir wants Rohit and Kohli to take part in the ODI series as The Men in Blue will only play six ODIs before the Champions Trophy 2023. If both players miss the ODI series, they will be back for the two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.
