Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract extension with an option to add another year. Although City have refused to make any official announcement, according to Atheltic, Guardiola has already agreed to make his stay at the club.
The Spanish manager joined Citizen in 2016 and has helped the side lift 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and their first UEFA Champions League triumph. Before coming to City, Guardiola had a four-year stint at Barcelona and before spending three seasons with Bayern Munich. The new contract is expected to be announced in the coming days and will take Guardiola’s reign at the Emirates to over a decade.

Previously, it had been reported that the 53-year-old was going to exit Man City at the end of the season along with the director of football for the club Txiki Begiristain, who is confirmed to be replaced by Hugo Viana of Sporting CP. There were rumours to him being looked at for succeeding Gareth Southgate as England’s next coach before Thomas Tuchel’s appointment. After Man City’s 4-1 loss to Sporting, Guardiola also dismissed rumours about taking over as the next coach of the Brazil team.
Guardiola’s new challenge at Man City
City are at present second in the Premier League table, five points behind Liverpool after matchday 11. The season has been challenging for Guardiola, who has now lost four consecutive matches across competition after City’s 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion. Still, Guardiola, in reflection of his first such streak, remained positive of turning the fortunes around for the team.
In their campaign to lift the Premier League trophy for the fifth consecutive time, Guardiola had stated his intention to face the drought and lift the “spirit” in the dressing room. City will return from international break and take Tottenham Hotspur at home.
The news of Guardiola’s stay will be welcomed, as the club’s top management has shown its trust in the Spaniard to lead the side. City losing key players to injury has reflected on the field and that will be the primary job in hand for Guardiola.
