New Delhi: Australia captain Pat Cummins has hinted at missing out on the Sri Lanka tour later this month. The squad for the two-match Test series is likely to be announced later this week, and it is expected, that some of the players, who part of the triumphant Border-Gavaskar Trophy, won’t be travelling to Sri Lanka.
Australia recently defeated India in the five-match Test series by a 3-1 margin as the 45-day long series was brought to curtains on Sunday in Sydney. Cummins was spot on with his tactical decisions to bring the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to home after a span of 10 years (Australia last lifted it in 2015).
Cummins picked the most wickets from Australia – 25 at 21.36 – including the figures of 3 for 44 in the second innings against India in the last match, playing second fiddle to Scott Boland.
What does Cummins say over his availability in Sri Lanka?
The Australian captain is expecting the birth of his second child later in the month. On top of that, Australia have qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s between June 11 and 15. Hence, the two Test matches in Galle are nothing but inconsequential for their key players to feature in.
“We will wait and see. Becky is hanging on at the moment, so we’ll play by it by ear. But most likely I might struggle to get over there (in Galle),” Cummins told reporters on Sunday.
Australian batter Steve Smith will most likely assume the captaincy responsibility as he has the experience of leading in sub continent and has also stood up for Australia in the absence of Cummins in the last three years.
Australia and Sri Lanka will play the first Test match between January 29 and February 2 at the Galle International Stadium in Galle. The two teams will again meet for the second Test from February 6 to 10 at the same venue.
