New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be rested for India’s upcoming white-ball series against England at home after suffering an injury scare during the recently concluded 5th Test against Australia in Sydney. Bumrah suffered back spasms on Day 2 of the Sydney Test and had to leave the field after bowling only 10 overs in Australia’s first innings.
He was later taken to a hospital for scans and didn’t return to bowl in the hosts’ second innings. Bumrah was arguably India’s best performer with the ball in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as he single-handedly carried the visitors’ pace attack throughout the series. Bumrah shattered numerous records as he finished with an impressive 32 wickets from 5 matches at an excellent average of 13.06.
However, despite Bumrah’s heroics, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 after suffering a crushing six-wicket defeat in the final 5th Test in Sydney on Sunday. The Indian team management is wary of Bumrah’s workload and is reportedly keen on resting the pacer for the majority of the England series. India will play 5 T20Is followed by 3 ODIs against England starting January 22.
As per a report in PTI, Bumrah will be rested for the majority of the England white-ball series keeping his participation in the Champions Trophy 2025 in mind. The report also stated that the extent of Bumrah’s injury is not known yet.
Depending on the grade of Bumrah’s back injury, the Indian pacer can be ruled out of action for a minimum of 2-3 weeks to three months for his recovery and rehab. India will open their campaign against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on February 20 and will hope Bumrah recovers in time for the premier tournament.
Champions Trophy squad to be announced soon
Meanwhile, India’s Champions Trophy squad is expected to be announced soon as the focus shifts on the mega event after the visitors’ debacle in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh are reportedly set to return to the ODI squad for the England series ahead of the Champions Trophy.
January 12 is the deadline for all teams to announce their squad for the Champions Trophy and India are expected to announce their squad by the end of this week.
