Ernakulam : Following the ‘Manjummel Boys’ episode where the producers of the movie faced charges of financial fraud, another case in similar pattern as emerged where one of the investor of the Super hit Malayalam movie called ‘RDX’ has filed a complaint against its makers over financial fraud.
The complaint was filed by Anjana Abraham alleging financial fraud due to unpaid promised profits from her investment in the movie.
According to the complaint, Anjana was approached by Weekend Blockbusters, the banner under which RDX was released which owned by Sophia and James Paul, to invest Rs 6 crore in the film directed by Nahas Hidayath. Despite a written promise from the producers that she would receive 30% of the film’s profits, Anjana claims she has only received Rs 3 crore and six lakh to date. She further alleged that this amount was paid only after numerous requests and demands. Anjana also alleged that she was kept in dark over the profits made by the film.
The complaint and the case registered subsequently has raised serious questions over the profit claims and the ‘success’ made by films released recently in Malayalam. Earlier, a similar complaint was filed against the makers of Manjummel Boys which has made huge profits in the industry.
Despite making a significant investment, I was not informed about the project’s costs, expenditure details, alleged budget changes, and other crucial financial information,” read the complaint.
Additionally, the complainant claimed that the accused had earned substantial revenue through profit-sharing agreements with overseas distributors, in addition to box office earnings, amounting to Rs 90 crore.
A producer based in Ernakulam who spoke under the conditions of anonymity said that similar cases of cheating has been raised in earlier occasions and this must be investigated.
“The Enforcement Directorate should probe the source of income of the investors and conduct a detailed probe so that there producers and makers are not being projected in poor light. We have observed many anomalies on the success claims of the movies. In some of the cases the figures are inflated and this should be checked”, said the producer to News9.
Meanwhile, the police have begun a detailed probe in the matter after statements were taken from the makers of RDX.
