Akash Deep reveals how advice from Jasprit Bumrah helped him in Australia Test series

New Delhi: Team India pacer Akash Deep praised Jasprit Bumrah as he revealed how crucial tips and advice from the senior pacer have helped him in his maiden tour of Australia. Akash Deep, a vital cog in India’s pace attack in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, is playing his first Test series Down Under. After warming the bench in the first two Tests, the right-arm pacer featured in the recently concluded third Test against Australia at the Gabba.

Akash Deep was unlucky in his spell during Australia’s first innings as he failed to make an impact despite bowling the right lengths and delivering the ball in the right areas. Akash Deep troubled the Aussie top order, including centurion Steve Smith but could manage only a solitary wicket in the hosts’ first innings. He followed it up with a couple of wickets in the second innings.

The 28-year-old pacer, who made the cut in the Test squad for the Australia tour on the back of his terrific show in the domestic circuit and for India in the home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, credited Bumrah for making life easier for him in Australia. Akash Deep revealed Bumrah urged him not to get overexcited and to stay disciplined as the pitches in Australia have enough for the fast bowlers.

“This is my first time in Australia. Jassi bhai has given me small tips, which has helped me,” Akash Deep said at the pre-match presser ahead of the 4th Test against Australia in Melbourne.

“He never complicates anything. He told me don’t get overexcited, stay discipline, wicket has enough here for the fast bowlers, just keep bowling the way you bowl in India,” he added.

While he picked up three wickets with the ball, Akash Deep also made a vital contribution with the bat to help India avoid follow-on in the 3rd Test at the Gabba and salvage a draw against Australia. Akash Deep played a crucial knock of 31 runs and shared a 47-run match-saving stand with Bumrah to help India avoid follow-on in the Test match.
