New Delhi: Gautam Gambhir’s refusal to confirm Rohit Sharma’s spot in the Sydney Test playing X1 during the pre-match press conference was the first big hint of what’s in store for the Indian skipper. Multiple reports of Rohit being ‘rested’ (a milder word to sugarcoat his axing) all but confirmed the team management’s bold move and now the latest development which revealed that the India skipper and the head coach avoided each other in the SCG nets ahead of the must-win clash at the SCG, rubber stamps Rohit’s axing from the series finale.
Gambhir’s press conference hints at Rohit’s omission
According to a report in PTI, Rohit and Gambhir did not talk to each other the entire match eve. Both of them avoided each other and were on opposite sides of the ground. During the press conference, the organisers had put two chairs which led to the assumption of a joint press conference but much to the disappointment of the media personnel, Gambhir came out to attend the presser, alone.
“It was around half past one when Gautam Gambhir walked towards the centre strip at the Sydney Cricket Ground with Jasprit Bumrah in tow. A few minutes later, Rohit Sharma also joined the duo in the middle but there was hardly any communication between the head coach and the designated captain,” according to PTI.
Rohit Sharma’s poor form and absence from nets
According to the bystanders, there was a complete breakdown of communication between Rohit and Gambhir further signalling that the former is no longer in the coach’s scheme of things. Rohit, with one half-century in the eight Tests this season, in all probability, reached the end of his Test career.
According to the report, Rohit found comfort in talking with vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah and chairman of the BCCI selection committee Ajit Agarkar.
Rohit, who has scored 31 runs in 3 Tests has come at a horrendous average of 6.20, looked at sea in the nets after arriving 35 minutes late and wasn’t carrying his kit.
