New Delhi: Are you always irritated or have a persistent feeling of tiredness? If yes, then get yourself checked. According to The World Health Organization (WHO), mood swings and irritation are among the most common signs of iron deficiency. As per WHO’s estimation, over 30 per cent of the world’s population are anaemic and most of them are due to iron deficiency, with various infectious diseases making the condition even more intensified.
While speaking to News9, Dr Anantha Padmanabha, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine said, “Feeling persistently exhausted or unusually irritable could signal more than just stress or lack of sleep—it might be an indication of undiagnosed iron deficiency. Iron is a crucial mineral that plays a significant role in producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen throughout your body. When iron levels are too low, your body struggles to create sufficient haemoglobin, leading to fatigue and a range of other symptoms.”
Problems iron deficiency can cause
According to Dr Padmanabha, “Iron deficiency anaemia can cause chronic tiredness because your body isn’t getting enough oxygen to fuel your daily activities. Alongside fatigue, you might experience irritability, difficulty concentrating, or even shortness of breath. These symptoms occur because your brain and body aren’t receiving the oxygen they need to function optimally.”
“Another common sign of iron deficiency is pale skin, but this can be less noticeable compared to fatigue and mood changes. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to consider your diet and overall health. Foods rich in iron, such as red meat, spinach, and lentils, can help boost your levels, but sometimes dietary changes alone aren’t enough,” added Dr Padmanabha.
A simple blood test to check your iron levels and determine if supplements or other treatments are needed. Addressing iron deficiency can significantly improve your energy levels and mood, enhancing your overall quality of life.
