Gwalior: Heavy security has been deployed for Sunday’s India-Bangladesh T20 match in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, an official said. According to a report in PTI, over 2,500 police personnel have been deployed for the opening match of the series amid calls for a shutdown.
The move comes after calls for protests and shutdown on Sunday (match day) by right-wing outfits against alleged atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown in August, according to an official.
The two team hotels where the players and staff have been staying since Wednesday have been brought under a heavy security blanket, the official added.
Security beefed up in Gwalior
“On the day of the match, personnel will be on the streets from 2 pm. They will be on duty till spectators reach home after the game is over. After prohibitory orders were invoked, monitoring has been tightened. We are keeping an eye on social media as well,” Gwalior Zone Inspector General of Police Arvind Saxena told PTI.
The district magistrate (DM), on Thursday, had given prohibitory orders banning protests and circulation of inflammatory material, especially on social media platforms to keep peace in a bid to organise an incident-free match. The orders will be in force till October 7, Monday, a day after the match.
The match will be played in the new Madhavrao Scindia International Stadium which holds a capacity of 30,000. This will be the first time Gwalior will host an international match in 14 years.
India will look to replicate the Test series performance when they take on Bangla Tigers in the T20I series. Rohit Sharma’s men completed a 2-0 whitewash over their neighbours. After brushing aside Bangladesh in the opening Test in Chennai, India completed a remarkable victory in Kanpur despite the match losing 235 overs of play due to wet outfield and rain.
It was a victory built on an aggressive brand of cricket not seen before in Test cricket.
The Men in Blue, under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, will look to continue the winning run against the visiting team. Following the opening match in Gwalior on Sunday, the action moves to Delhi for the second T20I on October 9, Tuesday. The final match of the series will be played in Hyderabad on October 12, Saturday.
The opening T20I will be played in the new Madhavrao Scindia International Stadium, which holds a capacity of 30,000. This will be the first time Gwalior will host an international match in 14 years. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
