Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasada Reddy has said that free bus travel for women in the state will begin in a month and that he asked officials to prepare a draft for making a final decision on the issue.
Speaking to the media, Ramprasada Reddy said that the government is keen on fulfilling all promises made during the election campaign including free bus travel for women. “We are hopeful of rolling out the scheme in a month.”
He also specified that care will be taken to ensure the scheme is rolled out properly as per local requirements and that they want to avoid the problems faced by Telangana, Karnataka governments during the implementation of the scheme.
After taking charge as minister on Sunday, he signed a file to set up a drivers’ training and research institute at a cost of Rs 18 crore in Prakasam district.
Referring to CM Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Kuppam, he clarified that steps will be taken to modernize Kuppam bus stand and depot. 5 new buses were launched on this occasion and about 30 buses were allotted to Kuppam depot after Chandrababu’s visit.
Telangana, Karnataka free bus travel scheme:
Congress governments in Telangana and Karnataka implemented free bus travel for women, impacting six lakh women in Telangana, collectively saving them Rs 1,177 crore. Telangana will spend an estimated Rs 2,500 crore and Karnataka will spend Rs 4,300 crore in FY 24 and Rs 6,000 crore in FY 25 towards the scheme.
