New Delhi: While his comeback was subdued on the first day of the Ranji Trophy 2024 Group C match between Bengal and Madhya Pradesh in Indore, the second day went in the favour of the Indian pacer. Mohammed Shami, who marked his return to cricket after almost an year, made stellar statement on Thursday by picking up four wickets in the game.
At stumps on the first day, MP were 103/1 after bowling out Bengal for 228 runs but Shami put his side in the drivers seat on the 2nd day claiming a sensational four-fer. Shami registered figures of 4/54 in 19 overs, powering Bengal to a first innings lead over Madhya Pradesh. In reply to Bengal’s first innings score of 228, MP were bowled out for 167 runs, giving the former a 61-run lead in the first innings.
Shami makes statement with skipper’s wicket
Mohammed Shami, who is undoubtedly a seasoned pacer in the Indian line up, picked skipper Shubham Sharma’s wicket, cleaning him up for just 8 runs. Saransh Jain also fell victim to the pacer as he was clean bowled for just 7 runs. Kumar Kartikeya and Kulwant Khejroliya were the other two batters in the side who were sent back to the pavilion by Shami.
Although, the veteran bowler did not bowl at full pace but he articulately kept troubling the MP batters and that too constantly. Apart from picking four wickets, he troubled some other batters in the line up multiple times, including Rajat Patidar. While the first day of the contest gave a signal that he was quiet, but the second day proved his prowess in the testing first-class encounter.
Although, squads have been finalised for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting on November 22 in Perth, his fiery Ranji performance with a strong message for the BCCI selectors could possible pave a way for his recall to the Indian set up, provided he’s able to maintain his fitness.
